- (1902-88)British film producer and novelist. Born in Hungary, he was a journalist and later worked in the film industry. With the rise of the Nazis, he left for France and settled in England in 1935. His films include The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, I Know where I'm Going, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. He also wrote a novel, The Glass Pearls, about a Nazi concentration camp doctor.
